Dunn-Edwards vs. Sherwin-Williams vs. Behr: Which Paint Actually Lasts in Southern California?
By Tim Nguyen, CM Painters9 min read
Every paint brand has marketing that says they're the best. After ten-plus years of painting homes across Riverside, Menifee, and the broader Inland Empire — with Dunn-Edwards, Sherwin-Williams, and Behr on different jobs — we have a pretty clear opinion about which one actually holds up.
This isn't a “they're all great, pick what matches your budget” post. They don't all perform the same. One brand fades noticeably faster than the others in Riverside sun. One holds color three-plus years longer on west-facing walls. One is convenient but mediocre.
If you're deciding what to put on your house, here's what we've seen over hundreds of real jobs in real SoCal conditions. Short summary up front, details below.
The Short Answer
For Southern California exteriors, we use Dunn-Edwards Evershield as our default and Sherwin-Williams Duration as a strong second option. Both hold up to Riverside sun, temperature swings, and Santa Ana winds with real staying power.
Behr Marquee — Home Depot's premium line — is fine for interior budget work. For exteriors in Riverside, it doesn't perform as well. We've seen Behr exterior paint fade visibly by year 3 on west-facing walls where Dunn-Edwards still looks clean at year 6.
Here's the truth: paint brand matters most on exteriors and high-wear interior rooms (kitchens, bathrooms, kids' rooms). On a guest bedroom that sees low traffic and indirect light, a mid-grade paint works fine. On a sun-beaten Riverside exterior, you're paying for longevity — and that's where the premium brands earn their keep.
Dunn-Edwards: The Local Favorite
Dunn-Edwards is a California company — headquartered in Los Angeles, formulating paint for this climate since 1925. That's not a coincidence. Their product lines are built around the specific conditions we paint in: UV intensity, dry heat, temperature swings, dust.
Their Evershield exterior line is what we put on most Riverside homes. It has excellent UV resistance, holds color noticeably longer than competing products at the same price point, and the flat/satin/semi-gloss sheens all perform consistently. Color retention is the standout — five years in, a Dunn-Edwards exterior still looks like the day it went on. We've checked.
Typical retail pricing is $55-75/gallon for Evershield. Contractor pricing at the pro counter is a little better. Dunn-Edwards stores are easy to find across Riverside and Corona — we're regulars at the Riverside location on Arlington.
The color selection is deep and their color matching is reliable. If you bring in a chip of your existing paint, they can match it closely, which matters for touch-ups on HOA-palette homes where you need to stay inside the approved color range.
Sherwin-Williams: The Industry Standard
Sherwin-Williams is the biggest paint brand most painters deal with. Duration and Emerald are their premium exterior lines, and both perform well in Riverside conditions — we use both regularly.
Duration is our second choice for Riverside exteriors, especially when we're matching an existing Sherwin-Williams color that a homeowner loves. Duration's color retention is close to Dunn-Edwards Evershield, and its cure rate is slightly faster, which helps in tight scheduling windows.
Retail pricing is $60-80/gallon. Professional contractor pricing through the Sherwin-Williams pro program is competitive with Dunn-Edwards once you factor in bulk purchasing. Most painters maintain a pro account somewhere — we keep accounts at both Dunn-Edwards and Sherwin-Williams so we can spec whichever brand fits the project.
Sherwin-Williams' reach is the biggest advantage. Every SW store carries the full pro line, and they have stores everywhere. Need to grab an extra gallon at 6 PM? Probably easier with SW than any other brand. For Riverside homeowners doing their own touch-up work years after a repaint, Sherwin-Williams availability is a real plus.
Behr: Better Than It Used to Be, But...
Behr has gotten better over the last decade. Their Marquee line is a genuine attempt at a premium interior paint, and it works well for interior walls in lower-traffic rooms.
But here's the honest take: Behr is an interior-first company, sold primarily through Home Depot. Their exterior products exist, but they're not what we'd choose for Riverside sun exposure.
We've done jobs where homeowners supplied Behr exterior paint, and we painted exactly what they bought. The jobs looked good at completion. By year 3, west-facing walls showed visible fade — enough that a neighbor asked about repainting when the Dunn-Edwards job next door still looked fresh from year one.
Where Behr makes sense: interior walls on a budget job. A guest bedroom, a hallway, a bonus room — spaces where premium performance isn't worth the 40% price premium. Marquee retails at $40-55/gallon, which is real money saved on a big interior job.
Where we don't spec Behr: exteriors anywhere in Riverside, kitchens, bathrooms, any high-traffic wall. The price difference isn't worth the shorter service life in those contexts.
What Paint Performance Actually Means in Riverside
Paint marketing talks about “superior finish” and “lasting beauty.” Here's what those claims actually mean when your house is in Riverside.
UV fade. The sun breaks down paint molecules over time. Cheaper paints use less expensive pigments and fewer UV-resistant additives. In Riverside, where we average 285+ sunny days a year, UV resistance is the single most important exterior paint property. Dunn-Edwards Evershield and Sherwin-Williams Duration are formulated for this. Budget exterior paints are not.
Moisture resistance. Riverside doesn't get a lot of rain — but when it does, it comes hard. Three-inch atmospheric river events in winter. Paint needs to shed water fast and breathe out moisture that gets behind it. Premium exterior paints do both. Cheap paints trap moisture, which lifts the paint off the substrate.
Temperature range. Riverside hits 100+ for days on end in summer and drops into the 30s on cold winter nights. Paint expands and contracts with the walls underneath. Paints that can't flex with those swings crack. Premium flexible acrylic formulations handle the range. Budget paints don't, especially on stucco.
Dirt pickup. Exterior paints get dusty in SoCal. Better paints shed dirt in the next rain. Cheaper paints hold onto it. The difference is visible by year 2 — Dunn-Edwards walls still look crisp, budget walls look chalky.
What We've Seen in Side-by-Side Riverside Jobs
A handful of Riverside homeowners have asked us to paint a specific elevation or outbuilding in a different brand than the main house — usually because they already had paint on hand, or wanted to compare. Those jobs are accidental side-by-side tests, and the results have been consistent.
One Orangecrest homeowner had us paint the main house in Dunn-Edwards Evershield and a detached garage in Behr Marquee exterior the same week. Both west-facing, same sun exposure, same prep standard. By year 3, the garage showed visible fade on the west-facing wall. The main house looked identical to the day we finished.
We've also seen the reverse — a Canyon Crest homeowner had us touch up a Sherwin-Williams Duration exterior from five years prior. Color matching was essentially perfect, and the original paint still looked crisp. That's the Sherwin-Williams and Dunn-Edwards difference we're talking about: you actually get the years the paint label promises.
The Price vs Longevity Math
Here's the math that makes the premium paint choice obvious.
Say you're painting a 2,000 sqft Riverside home. The paint difference between Behr Marquee exterior and Dunn-Edwards Evershield is roughly $300 over the whole job.
Premium paint gets you 8-10 years of real performance. Budget paint gets you 5-7 years in Riverside sun. Call it a 3-year difference conservatively.
Over 8 years, that $300 upgrade averages $37.50 per year. Compared to repainting 3 years earlier with cheaper paint — we're talking $5,000-$8,000 in labor and materials for a full exterior repaint — the premium paint choice saves you thousands.
Put differently: saving $300 on paint costs you $1,600-$2,700 per year you repainted too early. The premium isn't a premium — it's a discount on future repaint costs. It's also why we don't let price-conscious clients talk us into budget paint for exteriors. The savings aren't real.
Where We Use Each Brand
Here's the honest breakdown of how we spec paint at CM Painters, project by project.
Exteriors in Riverside. Dunn-Edwards Evershield primarily. Sherwin-Williams Duration when we're matching an existing SW color from a previous painter. Never Behr on exteriors. See our exterior painting service for scope details.
Interior high-traffic rooms (kitchens, bathrooms, kids' rooms, hallways). Dunn-Edwards Spartazero or Sherwin-Williams Emerald. These hold up to scrubbing, grease, and bumps. Emerald has excellent washability.
Interior standard rooms (bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms). Dunn-Edwards Velvet or Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint. Solid performers, lower price point than the premium lines, appropriate for their use case. Behr Marquee is also fine here for budget-sensitive clients. See our interior painting service for more detail.
Cabinet refinishing. Sherwin-Williams ProClassic. This one's specific — ProClassic self-levels better than almost any other waterborne enamel we've used, which matters when you're trying to get a factory-smooth cabinet finish. Dunn-Edwards makes a comparable product, but ProClassic is our go-to for cabinet refinishing.
Trim and doors. Sherwin-Williams ProClassic or Dunn-Edwards Aristoshield. Hard enamel finishes that hold up to kicks, scuffs, and daily wear without chipping or yellowing.
